Short answer: Choose the kind of combat responsibility you want, shortlist two classes, and test both before spending scarce upgrade resources. This is a decision guide, not a power ranking or a report of our own global-client playtest.

Start with the eight named classes

The official AION 2 global teaser names Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Chanter, Cleric, Sorcerer, and SpiritMaster. It confirms the names; it does not establish a best class, exact launch-build skills, or how difficult each will feel to a new player.

Use the table as a shortlist for inspection, based on familiar class archetype names. The “first look” column is an editorial starting point, not a verified AION 2 role assignment. Read the descriptions in your own client before deciding.

What you want to tryClasses to inspect firstQuestion to answer in the client
Close-range combat and staying near the actionGladiator, TemplarDo the opening abilities and defensive options feel readable under pressure?
Fast, precise attacksAssassin, RangerDo you enjoy the positioning and timing required by their actual early abilities?
Spell-focused combatSorcerer, SpiritMasterDo you prefer their real resource management and ability flow?
Helping a groupCleric, ChanterWhich available abilities help your group in the content you plan to play?

If a class description contradicts this shortlist, follow the client. A name alone does not prove a role or a tier position.

Make a provisional choice in three steps

  1. Pick one priority: close-range action, careful positioning, spell use, or helping teammates. If you mainly play solo, add “comfortable without a group” as a requirement.
  2. Choose two candidates from the table, then read their in-client starting abilities. If neither fits, switch to another pair rather than forcing a familiar class name.
  3. Test the same opening activity with both. Note which class lets you read enemy cues, move comfortably, and understand what to press next. Choose the one that wins your own test, not a pre-launch tier list.

Before committing hard-to-replace materials, confirm whether the client allows skill resets or another character on your account. We have not verified those rules for the global launch build.

A five-minute comparison sheet

Give each candidate a simple 0–2 score for each line: 0 = uncomfortable, 1 = workable, 2 = enjoyable. You do not need a damage meter or a perfect build.

CheckCandidate ACandidate B
I can understand the opening ability sequence0–20–2
I can move and react to encounter cues0–20–2
I enjoy the responsibility this class gives me0–20–2
I would happily repeat the first hour with it0–20–2

If the scores tie, pick the one you would rather keep playing tomorrow. That is a usable first-character decision; it makes no claim about late-game balance.

What remains to be verified

This site has not completed a controlled comparison in the global client. The September Launch Scale Test announced by NC means test material exists, but it is not evidence that we tested these classes ourselves or that every test-build detail will carry into launch. Record service, patch, region and activity before using any outside build. Once you have chosen, use the first-session checklist to prepare your opening play.
